Functions, processes and purposes…
As my contribution to this discussion I decided to try to break down Pebblepad into its various functions and processes, it boils down to something approximating this:
input > store > output
That, I think, describes the system’s core functions!
In more detail…
- Assets are input through:
~ Recording - directly into the system using the scaffolded record ‘types’ – Ability, Achievement, Action Plan, Experience, Meeting, Thought (and now Proforma)
~ Creating - (can involve aggregating) – Webfolio, Blog, CV
~ Self-Auditing or Profiling
~ Uploading - Single files, Multiple files, Image Galleries, Websites
~ Importing - From other Pebblepad’s or IMS eP packages
On input assets can be ‘tagged’
Other people’s assets are input / stored by the system if they are shared with any of a variety of permissions
- Nothing much happens during storage!
- Retrieval** is a better descriptor than output and is facilitated by tools for searching and filtering.
Assets may be retrieved for:
~ Reviewing
~ Editing
~ Sharing*
~ Publishing*
~ Linking (to other assets/items)
~ Printing
~ Exporting
~ Duplicating
~ Deleting
*Sharing and Publishing depend upon tools for managing contacts and permissions, as do some other functions like linking to Flickr, You Tube.
In terms of functions and/or processes for eportfolios (as digital presentations) the only processes required are those that allow creation, linking and sharing/publishing. The other functions/processes are part of a system with a wider purpose.
My feeling about the functions first posited on 21/08, e.g.:
- Helping people to understand themselves
- Educating about what others may want
- Educating for providing evidence…
…is that these are educational / developmental PURPOSES and are neither functions nor processes. Notwithstanding Tavis’ contribution identifying the ambiguity caused by perspective and scale I would suggest that Purpose needs to come before (and determine) Function and Process e.g.
Purpose: promote self-directed learners who are able to plan and review opportunities for self-development
Function: provide action planning tool with features for appending multiple reviews
Process: record > store > review (> store > share with comment permission > review > edit > store)
With the aid of my advanced drawing tool (PowerPoint) I’ve provided a diagram of PebblePad’s functions/processes? http://www.pebblepad.co.uk/eportfolio/viewasset.aspx?oid=17109&type=file
The purposes are myriad!
